Daily Prattle: Suicide Squad casting news

Oh boy it’s been a while since I posted one of my regular prattles, but this had to be done, despite my tight exam schedule. A hot set of casting news was revealed recently and some of them were confirmed rumors that had been going on for a while. The lead cast of the upcoming Suicide Squad movie has been announced and it’s one hell of a roster. Some of the people that have been cast have already been long rumored, but still it was exciting to finally get some solid news. I’m gonna be talking about each cast member and their respective character. I’m gonna start from the ones I really don’t know about to the ones I’m more familiar with. Let’s get it on.

For those unfamiliar with who the Suicide Squad are, they are basically an expendable crew of criminals recruited by the government to go on life threatening missions with promise of a reduced life sentence. They usually have tracker bombs installed in their necks in case they go AWOL, so they can be easily discarded. Over the years and the course of the comic history, the team has changed and many of the members have been replaced. But their mission always remains the same. Although they have appeared in TV in shows like Arrow and the Flash, those iterations are not going to be canon with the DC cinematic universe. David Ayer has been announced as the director of the movie, and with his excellent direction of Fury in establishing a perfect chemistry amongst the lead actors, I am totally pumped to see what he is gonna do. Here are the list of the cast and characters for the upcoming movie.

This is one actress that I’m not particularly familiar with, and the character she plays isn’t quite popular with me. I know the character had a big story arch in the Justice League Dark comic series(another comic book property likely to get a big screen adaptation, possibly directed by the widely imaginative Guillermo del Toro #sweet). I also happen to know that the character possesses mystical powers, which infers to me that the upcoming DC movies are most probably gonna deal with the supernatural. I will read more comics pertaining to the Enchantress to know more about her and I would check out the filmography of Cara Delevingne(I hope I’m spelling her name right). Either way I can’t wait to see her performance.

"I command you to be enchanted"

This is a character that has led the Suicide Squad on multiple occasions, think of him as a Nick Fury for miscreants. It seems he would also be leading the team in the movie. I hope to see him and Deadshot hassle each other over the leadership role. He is going to be played by none other than Tom Hardy, more known for his role as another DC character, Bane from the Dark Knight Rises. Tom Hardy is by far a talented actor and I can totally see him playing a rugged commander of a rag tag group. Tom Hardy is a brilliant addition to the cast.

"Time to break the ba.....i mean lead a team"

The character of Captain Boomerang was recently portrayed on the TV screen in the latest episode of Arrow, he was played by Nick E. Tarabay(Spartacus). Jai Courtney has been confirmed to take on the mantle(also from Spartacus). Courtney has been known to play baddies in the past before in movies like I, Frankenstein, Jack Reacher and Divergent. I’m convinced that he can pull off this character, granted he has appeared in a couple of lackluster movies, but I’ve always found his presence foreboding. As for the character, he can be quite laughable from the comics,as he is a character that utilizes boomerangs as his primary weapon, although the Arrow TV show was able to take him more serious. I hope they stick with his Australian origins and keep his accent.

"Every news that goes around, comes around"

This was a casting news that really got me excited, Will Smith is one of the most charismatic characters working today and Deadshot is a very interesting character as well, he is a trained mercenary who takes his missions as a suicidal playground. He once didn’t care if he lived or died during the mission until he discovered he had a daughter which gave him a reason to live. At first I was worried about Will playing this character, seeing that he usually plays the good guy, but then I realized our nonchalant and reckless his character was from Hancock. All that coupled with his unparalleled charisma, would be a sure pass for the role of Deadshot. Another person I would have considered for this role would have been Omari Hardwick from Power. He plays an anti-hero on that show that could relate to the character of Deadshot.

The Fresh Prince of Crosshairs

Finally an on screen appearance of the crazy clown obsessed former psychiatric doctor. I’ve been waiting a long time for her on screen debut. Margot Robbie had been rumored to play her for a while now and finally it had been confirmed. Now with that been said, I was a fan of her work in the critically acclaimed Wolf of Wall Street, so there is no doubt that she could act……….well crazy. The only issue is the fact that that is her one and only major on screen performance. She is due to appear alongside her co star Will Smith in an upcoming movie titled Focus. I do hope her performance there can confirm to me that she can handle the task of playing a character as complicated as Harley Quinn. I would have been interested in seeing Mila Kunis play this role as well.

"I'm not obsessive, I just like to hold on to things without letting go"

Oh this had to be the biggest news, as everyone was speculating on who could play the Clown Prince of Crime. I do think Jared Leto is a great actor(he does have his Oscar to prove it). But this is a tough act to follow, aside from the in-depth complexity of the character, he also has really big shoes to fill, as Heath Ledger owned the character in his own way and the image of that Joker is burned into the audience’s mind. Nevertheless I believe Jared Leto just has to develop the character in his own way while still paying homage to the Joker’s roots. My first choice when I heard that they were recasting the Joker was Robert Knepper(Prison Break), he justs knows how to play the crazy ones.

Guess the crazy one

With all this characters cast, there leaves one more, Amanda Waller, who is usually the director in charge of the team. She is tough as nails and has a strict policy and would not hesitate in ‘discarding’ a Suicide Squad member during a jeopardizing moment. Currently I’ve heard that there are three actresses on the list namely Whoopi Goldberg, Viola Davis and Oprah Winfrey, yes the actual Oprah. This really sounds interesting, and it would be quite something to see Oprah appear in a comic book movie. My first choice would be Viola Davis though, just because of her acting history of playing tough women. She can also play a no nonsense head of an organization. Who do you think should be cast as Amanda Waller? And which of the other casting choices do you not necessarily agree with? Let me know in the comment section below. I really look forward to this movie and hope it delivers on an epic scale. For people not really still familiar with the Suicide Squad, I strongly recommend Batman: Assault on Arkham, it’s an animated movie that, contrary to the title, focuses on the Suicide Squad and their relationship with one another. Cinema Corner: The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1

Despite the long title, the latest entry into the Hunger Games franchise did not fail to entertain and inform the audience. The movie was darker than its predecessors and it delved deeper into that effect that a single person can have on a group of people. The movie follows Katniss Everdeen as she recovers in the underground District 13 and her ongoing battle to bring down President Snow and the Capitol. I would be giving my review of the movie and laying out my pros and cons as well. Be wary of minor spoilers as I would try not to reveal as much details as possible. Let’s get it on.

May the odds be in her favour

Like previously mentioned the movie opens with a recovering Katniss has she is still visibly shaken by the events of the previous movie. Her actions at the Quarter Quell were a powder keg that sparked a fire of rebellion in other people across the districts. Katniss is then approached by Plutchard Heavensbee(with the amazing late Philip Seymour Hoffman reprising his role) and the new addition to the cast, President Alma Coin played Gunther gorgeous Julianne Moore. They notice the beacon of hope that she has become to the people due to her various selfless acts and intend to use her as a spark to led the revolution by making her the titular Mockingjay. The movie really shows the amount of facade that both sides of a war a willing to play in order to prove their points. Katniss was been used by the District 13 folks while Peeta was been used as the weapon by President Snow to placate Katniss from leading the rebellion. Most of the supporting characters return as Effie Trinket(Elizabeth Banks) and Haymitch Abeynatch(Woody Harrelson) reprise their roles in gearing Katniss up for the responsibility as the icon of the people. The movie felt more like a war movie than a young adult movie which was really impressive as this allowed the themes to be taken more seriously and not all young adult movies are romantic fests.

"Pfff I wanted a red rose to go with my mockingjay outfit"

The propaganda videos made by the guys at District 13 with Katniss leading the rebellion were also a nice reference to how actual wars in our times now are fought. Through the use of videos and pictures, most countries win wars psychologically before the physical altercation even begin. Never underestimate the power of the masses as a political weapon in winning a war, as it was shown in various districts that started rebelling against the guards and destroying important sources of power to the Capitol. Another really powerful moment in the movie was the scene that showed Katniss visiting the now demolished District 12, which was intended to ignite her rage towards the Capitol as she was feeling reluctant to lead the rebellion. The scenes were particularly well shot as you could see the destruction and desolation of the district. The tension rose more towards the end of the movie with a particularly interesting scene after a huge rescue that really came as a surprise. Overall this was a strong improvement over Catching Fire, which was a movie I quite enjoyed as well. Although as a two part finale, I couldn’t help but notice how much of a filler this movie was as it is setting itself up for the second part.

"My beanie makes me look artistic"

-Mature tone: The movie did it’s best to highlight pivotal points in a more mature way
-War empathy: Through the propaganda videos, we were shown how a rebellion can be perpetuated just like in our real world.
-Solid performances: Strong acting from lead characters like Jennifer Lawrence, Julianne Moore and Philip Seymour Hoffman and the other returning cast.
-Engaging plot: We were never really aware of what was coming as the movie hooked the audience on a thrilling ride.

-Excessive focus on Katniss: Even though she was the lead actress, the entire movie didn’t really show enough of the other characters or districts.
-Filler scenes: This is a minor con, but as a first part, some scenes were noticeably dragged on in order to extend the movie.
-Cat scene: A particularly annoying scene involving Katniss and her sister.

Altogether this was an interesting movie and a good first part to the upcoming sequel next year. The war themes were well done and were reflective of our current society. I would give this movie a 7.5 out of 10. A stellar cast and engaging story only hampered by a couple of filler scenes. I look forward to the last part next year and hope it can bring the series to a well concluded end. Let me know what you think of the movie if you have seen it. Feel free to comment below. Which other young adult novel would like to see adapted for the big screen? Till next time. Szia.
